Poem from Lux

Bringing My Typewriter to School…Written during AP Language and Composition

My typewriter stays home, as a rule,
And does not accompany me to school,
But today I received a huge reaction
When I brought in my old contraption.

“What is that ridiculous machine?
It’s the strangest thing I’ve ever seen!
Observe the way it shifts and quakes
And the ‘clackety-clacks’ its keyboard makes!”

But what causes my vexation
Is the astonished congregation
Who wander out of hall and class
To surround me in a screaming mass.

“It must be wireless,” someone yells,
“What with all the knobs and bells!
What sort of service do you get
When you surf the internet?”

Who would think this dinosaur
Would cause such a mighty uproar?
And if my typewriter gets a laugh,
What will they think of my phonograph?”
